Not all innovation is created equal.
Our clients find it helpful to distinguish different types of innovation to ensure they provide the appropriate support, resources and oversight to generate new sources of growth and remain successful within existing businesses.
At Change Logic we analyze a firm’s innovation portfolio along two axes. The horizontal axis is the degree of change in core capabilities and the vertical axis is the degree of change in customers served. The output is an “Innovation Streams” map, which is based on more than 40 years of research by our founders, Professor Mike Tushman and Professor Charles O’Reilly.
The Innovation Streams map guides strategic decisions about investment and identifies gaps in the portfolio. It also informs execution plans to ensure they address the unique organizational challenges that each type of innovation presents.
